Elena Surovtseva was born in 1952 in Kazakhstan. She graduated from the Moscow Higher Industrial Arts School (formerly the Stroganov School). She lives and works in Moscow. She has participated in more than 200 exhibitions in the USSR, Russia and abroad (Germany, Belgium, Hungary, the Netherlands, etc.), including in solo ones. Honored Artist of the Russian Federation, Laureate of the State Prize in Literature and Art (1996). In form, Surovtseva’s artworks are unique and deeply personal. A well-defined silhouette, a contrasting combination of heavy, broadly resolved masses with light, flattened, carefully crafted details. Plastic of the female body brings with it great opportunities.
In recent years, she has discovered a new understanding of sculpture; stylized, symbolic, abstract works has appeared, similar to sacred signs and ghostly silhouettes, which are very trendy and interesting in terms of design solutions.
Her artworks can be found in the Tretyakov Gallery, museums in Russia, in private collections in Russia, Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, and France.
